Renewable EPC Hybrid Commissioning Sequence with GT

Your hybrid plant brings together solar arrays, a battery system and gas turbine generators under one controller. Each part can be tested on its own, but the plant only works when they run together, sharing load, holding voltage and frequency, and handing over smoothly when the sun drops or a unit trips.

If you commission in the wrong order or skip the integrated tests, the risks show up after handover: controllers that fight each other, protection that trips the whole plant, batteries that never charge properly and turbines that start too late. That means downtime, delay to commercial operation and penalties under your power contract.

USP&E Helps You Commission Hybrid Plant in the Right Order

We know you want a hybrid plant that works as one system from day one. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers engineer, build and commission solar, battery and gas turbine plant. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not need to test everything at once. You need a sequence that proves each system safely, then proves them together, with clear hold points and sign-offs.

Commission the Backbone First

Start with your electrical backbone: earthing, substation, switchgear, protection and auxiliary supplies. Nothing else can be tested safely until these are energised and proven. Check protection settings against the study for every source, because a hybrid plant sees different fault levels depending on which sources are running.

Next bring up your controls and communications network so every system can be monitored and controlled from the start. Many hybrid commissioning problems trace back to communications that were never fully tested.

Our single-contract EPC approach puts one team in charge of the full sequence, so there is no gap between the solar contractor, the battery supplier and the turbine team.

Prove Each System, Then Integrate

Commission each system on its own: your gas turbine generators or gensets first, because they set voltage and frequency for the others; then your battery system; then the solar arrays in blocks. Record each test against the agreed procedures and only move on when each system is signed off.

Then run integrated tests through the plant controller. Test load sharing, ramp-rate control, solar drop-off, battery charge and discharge, and turbine starts triggered by low battery or high load. Trip each source deliberately and check that the plant recovers without losing your critical loads.

Our hybrid power systems teams write these integrated tests around how you will actually run the plant, not just the equipment datasheets.

Run a Reliability Period and Hand Over

Finish with a reliability run of agreed length under real operating conditions, ideally through cloudy days and peak loads. Log every alarm and trip and fix the causes before handover. Your handover pack should include as-built drawings, settings files, test records and operating procedures.

The same sequence works whether the firming comes from a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, other used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations or new gas turbine generators. If your plant will sell power to others, read how IPPs structure projects to align commissioning with the contract.

AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute run under hyperscale EPC/O&M follow the same integrated testing, as will the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. Global Offices Behind Your Renewable EPC Programme

Your team wants answers in its own time zone. USP&E’s offices in Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) lead your renewable EPC firming BOP conversations in the US, from the first data request to the site visit, so questions about fuel, interconnection and delivery are answered by people who can be on site.

The wider network carries the heavy lifting for PV and BESS interfaces, GT firming blocks and substations: London (162-168 Regent Street) for structuring and finance, Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) for engineering and project controls, Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) for design and commissioning support, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) for China supply chain and manufacturing.

For hybrid commissioning, Colorado Springs and Knoxville engineers can plan your sequence and integrated tests, while Johannesburg and Cape Town support African mine and industrial sites. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. USP&E’s reach covers 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and the company is ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

USP&E Track Record for Renewable EPC

You want proof that USP&E has built and commissioned power plants on demanding schedules. These projects show that record.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.
  • Perenco, Guatemala: USP&E delivered a 13.1 MW HFO/diesel modular power station under full EPC in under five months, on time and on budget. Read the case study.

HowTo: Sequence Commissioning on a Hybrid Plant with GT

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your plant design, controller philosophy and schedule. 2. Receive a commissioning sequence with hold points and tests. 3. Commission, run the reliability period and hand over with confidence.

  1. Agree the commissioning sequence with the grid operator, the lender’s engineer and every contractor.
  2. Back-feed the substation and auxiliary systems before any generation is connected.
  3. Commission solar, wind or battery blocks and the gas turbine units system by system.
  4. Test the hybrid controller with each generation source before testing them together.
  5. Run the grid tests and the combined performance tests in the agreed order.
  6. Close punch items and hand over with complete test records.

FAQ: Renewable EPC Hybrid Commissioning Sequence with GT

What order should a hybrid power plant be commissioned in?

USP&E commissions the electrical backbone first, then controls and communications, then each source on its own, usually gas turbines or gensets, then batteries, then solar blocks. Integrated tests through the plant controller come last, followed by a reliability run under real operating conditions before handover.

Why commission the gas turbines before the solar arrays?

USP&E usually brings turbines or gensets up first because they set the voltage and frequency that inverters and battery systems follow on many off-grid and weak-grid sites. Proving the firm source first gives the other systems a stable reference during their own tests.

What integrated tests does a hybrid plant need?

USP&E tests load sharing, ramp-rate control, solar drop-off, battery charge and discharge, turbine starts triggered by low battery or high load, and deliberate trips of each source. The plant must recover from every trip without losing critical loads before it is handed over.

What should a hybrid plant handover pack include?

USP&E hands over as-built drawings, protection and controller settings files, test records, reliability run logs and operating procedures. A complete pack lets your operators run the plant, troubleshoot faults and make changes later without guessing how the system was set up.

Where are USP&E’s offices for renewable EPC projects?

USP&E leads renewable and hybrid EPC projects from Colorado Springs and Knoxville in the US. London supports contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add engineering and field depth across Africa, and Wuxi follows up inverters, batteries and equipment made in China.

Has USP&E delivered power plant EPC projects before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include zero-hour Wabtec GE16V250 gensets for Zondereinde mine and a 13.1 MW modular station for Perenco in Guatemala delivered under full EPC.

Is USP&E a broker for renewable EPC?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E engineers, builds and commissions hybrid plant with its own people, so the team that writes your commissioning sequence is the same team that runs the tests, fixes the faults and answers for the plant at handover.

How fast can USP&E plan a commissioning sequence?

USP&E can start as soon as you share your plant design, controller philosophy and schedule. Engineers flag missing hold points, untested interfaces and protection gaps first, so they are resolved well before your teams arrive on site to commission the plant.

Commission One Plant, Not Three Systems

Follow a clear sequence and your hybrid plant runs as one system from handover. Skip the integrated tests and the faults appear after commercial operation. USP&E will help you plan, test and hand over with confidence.
