Renewable EPC Reactive Power GT
You are delivering a renewable EPC project with a grid connection agreement that demands voltage support and reactive power, day and night. Inverters can do part of the job, but weak grids, long lines and fault ride-through requirements often ask for more than the solar or wind plant alone can give.
Miss your reactive power obligations and you face failed compliance tests, curtailed output, delayed commercial operation and penalties. Your lenders notice, your offtaker notices and your margin shrinks every month the plant runs below its potential.
USP&E as Your Guide to Voltage Support That Passes Every Test
We know renewable EPC teams carry grid compliance risk that is easy to underestimate. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations and supplied about 25 000 MW, and our 400+ engineers and project managers combine renewables with synchronous plant that strengthens weak grids. We work under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Treat Voltage Support as a Contract Obligation
Voltage support is a contract obligation, not a by-product. Read your connection agreement carefully: required power factor range, reactive capability at low output, voltage control mode, fault ride-through and response times. Many plants meet reactive requirements at full sun and fail them at dawn, dusk or night, often because nobody tested those conditions before the compliance visit.
Map your reactive capability across the whole operating range, including when panels produce nothing. If inverters cannot cover night-time requirements, you need static compensation, synchronous condensers or synchronous generation to fill the gap, and the choice affects your layout, your budget and your operating model. Decide early, because a synchronous block needs fuel, foundations and a grid bay that are hard to add once construction starts.
Add Synchronous Gas Turbine Blocks for Real Grid Strength
Synchronous gas turbine generators add inertia, short-circuit strength and reactive power that inverters cannot fully replicate. On weak grids they stabilise voltage, support protection systems and help your plant ride through faults. Natural gas engines/stations offer similar benefits at smaller scale with fast starts.
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B or used/new gas turbines can supply firm energy and voltage support while your renewable plant ramps. Some can run as synchronous condensers when not generating, providing reactive power without burning fuel, if the clutch and controls allow it. Confirm that capability with records and a test before you build your compliance case around it.
Stage Voltage Support and Plan FX-45 Growth
Stage your voltage support with your project phases. Early phases may rely on a bridge unit and static compensation, while later phases add permanent synchronous blocks. Run grid studies at each stage so you never commission a phase that fails its tests, and keep your offtaker informed so expectations match what each phase can deliver.
Reserve bays for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1 blocks, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz with capacity slots from 2028. If your plant later serves compute campuses with AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, one hyperscale EPC/O&M team keeps voltage support consistent.
Where USP&E Supports Your Renewable EPC Project
If your renewable EPC firming BOP is in the United States, your first conversations run through USP&E’s US offices in Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700). They keep you close to developers, utilities, gas suppliers and US equipment sources, and they can walk your site before anything ships.
Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) runs engineering, protection studies and project controls for PV and BESS interfaces, GT firming blocks and substations, and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) adds design and commissioning support. London (162-168 Regent Street) structures the contract, insurance and financing file your lenders will read, while Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) follows up China supply chain and manufacturing.
For your renewable EPC firming scope, US engineers can work with your grid consultant and offtaker on voltage requirements, while PV and BESS interfaces, GT firming blocks and substations are engineered as one compliant system. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. USP&E has guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries, and is ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
USP&E Track Record for Renewable EPC
You want proof that USP&E delivers firm, reliable generation alongside complex projects. These projects show that capability.
- USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
- Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.
- Perenco, Guatemala: USP&E delivered a 13.1 MW HFO/diesel modular power station under full EPC in under five months, on time and on budget. Read the case study.
HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your connection agreement, grid study and phase plan under NDA. 2. Receive a reactive power and voltage support strategy for each phase. 3. Commission, pass compliance tests and hand over accountable O&M.
- Extract power factor, voltage control, and fault behaviour requirements from the connection agreement.
- Score synchronous options, such as used/new gas turbines, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, and natural gas engines/stations, on capability curve and excitation-system condition.
- Request records, inspection findings, and controls status for candidates at the central inventory hub.
- Size the plant controller and compensation yard so later modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1 blocks (50/60 Hz, capacity slots from 2028) join without new logic.
- Write the reactive split between inverters, GT blocks, and compensation into one Extreme Ownership file.
- Test set-point tracking and ride-through across operating modes before compliance sign-off.

FAQ: Renewable EPC Reactive Power GT
Why do renewable EPC projects need extra reactive power support?
USP&E sees many renewable projects meet reactive requirements at full output but fail them at dawn, dusk or night. Weak grids, long lines and fault ride-through rules can demand more support than inverters provide, so static compensation or synchronous plant may be required.
What do synchronous gas turbine blocks add to a renewable plant?
USP&E uses synchronous gas turbine blocks to add inertia, short-circuit strength and reactive power that inverters cannot fully replicate. They stabilise voltage on weak grids, support protection systems and provide firm energy when your solar or wind output falls away.
Where are USP&E’s offices for US renewable EPC projects?
USP&E’s US offices in Colorado Springs and Knoxville keep renewable EPC teams close to developers, utilities and US equipment sources, with site visits before anything ships. Johannesburg runs engineering and protection studies, Cape Town supports design, London structures finance and Wuxi follows up China manufacturing.
Has USP&E delivered firming and turbine projects before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies include six Wabtec gensets giving the Zondereinde mine 25 MW of base load and a 13.1 MW modular station in Guatemala.
Is USP&E a broker for firming equipment?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants, so the team planning your voltage support is also accountable when your grid operator runs compliance tests on the plant.
How fast can USP&E respond to a reactive power compliance issue?
USP&E can review your connection agreement, grid study and test results as soon as you share them. Engineers identify the capability gap first, then recommend settings, compensation or synchronous plant, and the timeline depends on equipment lead times and grid approvals.
Can a gas turbine run as a synchronous condenser?
USP&E can configure some gas turbines to run as synchronous condensers when not generating, providing reactive power and inertia without burning fuel. This requires a suitable clutch, controls and protection, so feasibility is confirmed unit by unit before you rely on it.
Should voltage support be staged with project phases?
USP&E recommends staging voltage support with each project phase and running grid studies before every commissioning step. Early phases may use bridge units and static compensation, while later phases add permanent synchronous blocks as the plant and its obligations grow.
